Lisbon (also called “Lisboa”) is the fascinating and enchanting capital city of Portugal. Facing the Tagus River, it’s a mecca for families and couples who love mixing history and culture with relaxing, good food and good times. Modern yet traditional, Lisbon perfectly reflects the Portuguese culture, with its vibrant energy and laid back feel. Although it’s considered to be one of the top ten cities in the world to visit, it’s actually never particularly overcrowded which is great for wandering around at your own pace without feeling rushed.

The city of Lisbon and the surrounding area is perfect for a main vacation or as a stop off for a few days on the way to Spain or other parts of Europe. Don’t forget to spend a day in Alfama, Belem and Estrela as well as exploring Parque das Nações and North Lisbon. In terms of accommodation, it’s often best staying fairly near to the historic centre of Baixa, Chiado, Bairro Alto or close to the southern end of Avenida da Liberdade. These areas cover the heart of Lisbon, with its many restaurants, bars, markets and shopping opportunities. Bairro Alto in particular is great for adult-only vacations thanks to its energetic nightlife. However, if you’re on a budget you may wish to think about staying slightly further out of the city as it’s less expensive, but with an efficient Metro system you still won’t miss out on the fun.

Despite being on a river, Lisbon is also close to a stunning coastline complete with breath-taking sandy beaches, all which are only a short ride away on public transport. There are two easily accessible coastal regions from Lisbon; Cascais-Estoril region (to the west of Lisbon) and Costa Caprica to the south. For a slightly further day trip, the beautiful beach town of Sesimbra, the colossal palace of Mafra and the picturesque walled town of Obidos are also well worth a visit.
